NETAJI SUBHAS OPEN UNIVERSITY (NSOU) STUDY CENTRES

 

With an objective to offer the benefits of higher education to maximum number of students, there are two units of Netaji Subhas Open University’s Study Centres are presently functioning under Durgapur Government College, namely

(i)                 Post-Graduation in Zoology (Lab based)and

(ii)               Bachelor Degree Programme (BDP) and PG in General stream courses like Humanities, Social Science and non-lab based subjects.

 

The PG Zoology unit started it journey since 2007 with an intake capacity of 25 students. This unit of NSOU is run by the Department of Zoology, Durgapur Government College. The faculty members mainly comprises of College teachers and Guest teachers from University of Burdwan, Kalyani University,  Barasat State University and from different colleges like R.B.C. College, Lady Babourne College, Chandannagar Government College, Viddyasagar College.

The admission process is centralised and conduct by NSOU itselfbased on merit and counselling.

 

The second unit started its functioning since 2012 and presently has 1120 under its purview. It offers following subjects:

a.     Bengali                                                        (BDP & PG)

b.     English                                                       (BDP & PG)

c.      History                                                      (BDP & PG)

d.     Political Science                                         (BDP & PG)

e.     Public Administration                                  (BDP & PG)

f.       Mathematics                                               (BDP & PG)

g.     Commerce                                                  (BDP & PG)

h.     Library and Information Science                  (BDP & PG)

i.        PG in Social Work 

j.       PG in English Language Teaching

k.     PG in Education

Admission process is controlled from the NSOU central office and it is open to all those who fulfils the minimum admission criterion as fixed by the university. College teachers and Guest teachers (who have the required criteria) comprise the faculty. Students who could not reach the minimum merit standard in colleges and universities for regular courses, get and immediate and effective option in continuing their studies without year loss. Working students, house-wife, elderly people and many others who had not been able to carry on their studies for various reasons, get another chance to complete their graduation and post graduations levels through these study centres.

The university is accredited and approved by the University Grand Commission, New Delhi and hence is at per with leading universities within and outside the state.

Prof. Kuntal Bhattacharya (Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Durgapur Government College) is presently the Coordinator of The PG Zoology unit and Prof. Kripasindhu Kumar (Head, Department of Physics, Durgapur Government College) who coordinate the second unit, apart from office staff from Durgapur Government College office.

Being an Open University, Saturdays and Sundays are the main working days with the following working hours :

Saturday :After 2 P.M. till 5 P.M.

Sunday : 11 A.M to 5 P.M.

Classes are scheduled within these span of time, all through the year.  Admission, Registration, Form fill-up of Examination and publication of results are carried out online. Study materials are made available to the students in both hard and soft formats.

NSOU carries out radio program to spread awareness regarding the expertise courses offered by it, titles Gyanbani.

Full-time and Part-time teachers of Durgapur Govt. College are engaged in-

1.     taking classes as Personal Contact Programme of BDP  

2.     examination duty during the Term-end examination conduct by the university

3.     evaluations of Assignments and examination scripts of Term-end examinations
