DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY

Professor Pratip Kumar Mukherjee, the founder Principal of Durgapur Government College and an eminent scholar in the field of Earth Sciences took the initiative to establish the Department of Geology. In 1972 his dream finally came true, and the Department of Geology started its journey under the stewardship of Professor Gauri Shankar Ghatak. In spite of lots of constraints, the performance of the students of this department in the university examinations and in the national level entrance examinations for postgraduate studies in IITs, ISM and other national institutions could establish this department as one of the leading undergraduate teaching departments in eastern India. In the year 1983, as a recognition of successful teaching performance over a decade, Burdwan University, the then affiliating university of this college, decided to upgrade this department to the status of postgraduate department of Geology of the University. Consequently, Durgapur Government College got the status of constituent college of Burdwan University. Over a period of four decades the budding earth scientists produced by this department gradually blossomed as eminent professionals or academicians in different organizations and institutions in the country and abroad. As recognition of its research and teaching performances, the department came under the FIST Programme of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India in 2004. A student organization, Association for the Culture of Earth Sciences (ACES) was founded on 8th February 1989, mainly to encourage the juvenile minds to explore different aspects of Earth Sciences beyond the formal framework of university curriculum. Organization of periodic seminars, quiz contest etc. is the main activity of this association. The journal of the association Geolozine, published every alternate year, provides the budding geologists of this department with a platform for expressing their ideas. The students are specially trained in the procedure of writing research and review articles, and are also exposed to the concept of plagiarism, the most serious intellectual offence. The department is committed to disseminate the best possible education to its students, and always try to do justice to its reputation. Achieving a target cannot be the destination, this department believes in fixing new target to move forward.
