DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY

 

The Department of Botanyin Durgapur Government Collegeoffers undergraduate courses in Botany Honours and General. The teaching of this subject had started in this college as General course in 1997. The Honours course in Botany was introduced in the year 2003 under the Headship of Dr.Nirmalendu Das.Some of the distinguished faculties, who contributed to this department in past include: Professor SatyendranathBhaumik, Dr. KhondakarZahidur Islam, Dr. Jyotsna Dhara, Debasis Pal, KasturiGhatak, SibaniSamanta (Mitra), Dr.SaswatiLaha, Professor BenudharMondal, Dr. Bharati Mukhopadhyay, and Dr.MoumitaBasu.

Honours Graduates from this department got admitted inthe leading universities of the country, like Burdwan University, Kanpur University, Annamalai University, Benaras Hindu University, etc. for MSc courses. Some of the past students are now involved in teaching profession in various schools. Many of the students have either completed their PhD work, or are now doing PhD in renowned universities of India.

Every year, students of this department actively participate in district science exhibition, annual exhibition of the college, annual athletic meet of the college, and in various cultural programmes and many of them have excelled in them.

Educational tours to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden (Shibpur, Howrah), different parts of Eastern Himalayas, Sundarbansand tours of the college campus and adjoining areas are conducted by the faculties of the department, assisted by the members of the non-teaching staffs every year. Students are very much benefitted from these tours and can understand the subject in a better way.

Departmental Library

This library consists of 234 books of both Indian and foreign authors about the various disciplines of Botany. It contains both rare books that are out of the market now-a-days and also books of recent edition.

Class rooms equipped with projector

Classroom teaching is mostly done by chalk and talk method. Besides, lectures are also given with the aid of LCD projector and overhead projector. Also, students are allowed to use the departmental computer to learn from You tube videos and Powerpoint slides available in the Internet.
